Powrie Castle, Fortified house in Dundee, Scotland
Powrie Castle is a fortified house featuring a two-storey Z-shaped plan with round towers positioned at opposite corners for defensive coverage. The layout combines residential spaces with protective architectural elements typical of its period.
The Fothringham family built the castle in 1412, but the Scrymgeours destroyed it in 1492 during regional conflicts. The structure was later rebuilt and continued to evolve over subsequent centuries.
The north wing displays Renaissance craftsmanship through its vaulted spaces and rounded tower details, showing the building methods of its time.
The building was converted into a private residence between 1978 and 1981, making public access restricted. Visitors should note that this is a private home and cannot be visited inside.
The castle's restoration was driven by a National Trust for Scotland competition in which designer Gillian Strickland won ownership of the property. Her winning restoration plan made her not just the designer but also the owner of the castle.
