Royal Insurance Building, Grade II listed hotel in Liverpool, England
Description
The Royal Insurance Building on North John Street displays Neo-Baroque design with Portland stone walls supported by a steel frame. The exterior features Greek Doric columns running across multiple stories and topped with a golden-domed campanile.
History
The building was constructed between 1896 and 1903 as the headquarters for Royal Insurance Company and became an important part of Liverpool's commercial landscape. In 2014 it was transformed into the Aloft Liverpool Hotel, giving it a modern purpose while keeping its original character.
Culture
The original rooms of the former General Office and Board Room show how Victorian companies designed their workspaces with attention to detail. These spaces reflect the importance of the insurance business to Liverpool's growth and character.
Practical
The hotel sits in central Liverpool within easy walking distance of major transport links and business areas. Its central location makes it straightforward to explore other parts of the city.
Did you know?
The campanile at the building's top is covered in gold leaf and stands out distinctly with its shiny finish against the Portland stone below. Many visitors pass by without noticing this gleaming detail that catches the light at different times of day.
