Spanish City, Entertainment complex in Whitley Bay, United Kingdom
Spanish City is an entertainment complex on the seafront in Whitley Bay, where a white domed building with two towers holds restaurants, bars and event spaces overlooking the North Sea. Inside, the venues spread across multiple levels while portions of the original ironwork remain visible.
The building opened in 1910 as a concert hall and dining venue, quickly becoming a leisure destination for day-trippers from northeast England. After decades of decline and closure, a thorough restoration from 2016 onwards brought the landmark back into public life.
The name traces back to a Spanish company that funded construction in 1910 and brought Moorish architectural elements to the design. Today the building draws people who come to eat by the sea or gather for events beneath the restored dome.
The site opens daily, with each restaurant and event space keeping its own hours. Access is direct from the seafront promenade, and most areas are at ground level or reached by ramps.
The copper dome nearly faced requisition during World War One to supply material for the war effort. Only intervention by local authorities saved the landmark from dismantling and preserved its silhouette for future generations.
