St John the Evangelist's Church, Newton Arlosh

The church features a fortified west tower with thick walls, narrow arrow-slit windows, and an upper chamber accessed by a spiral staircase.

Originally constructed in 1303 by Holm Cultram Abbey monks, the church received a fortification license in 1304 to protect against Scottish raids.

The 1844 restoration by Sara Losh introduced architectural elements including rams' head corbels and a carved eagle on the nave roof.

The church maintains regular Morning Worship services every second Sunday at 10:45, following the Common Worship liturgy format.

Inside the tower chamber, a medieval fireplace remains intact, demonstrating the structure's dual purpose as both a church and defensive refuge.
