Corporation Street Bridge, Steel and glass footbridge in Manchester city centre, England.
Corporation Street Bridge is a footbridge with a twisted tubular steel and glass structure connecting the Marks and Spencer building to the Manchester Arndale shopping center across Corporation Street. The structure has a curved, vault-like design with large window panels that allow light in and provide views onto the street below.
The current bridge was designed by architect Stephen Hodder and opened in 1999, replacing an earlier structure damaged in the 1996 IRA bombing of Manchester. Its construction was part of the city's recovery and rebuilding efforts following that attack.
The bridge links two major shopping centers and is used daily by thousands of visitors moving between stores and businesses. It has become an ordinary part of city life, shaping how people navigate and experience the commercial heart of the center.
The bridge is easy to spot from ground level below and accessible from both shopping centers on either side. It is designed for foot traffic, so expect it to be crowded during peak hours, particularly on weekends.
The bridge takes a hyperboloid shape and stands directly above the location where the 1996 explosion occurred, making it a symbol of resilience. The twisted design was revolutionary for its time and later received multiple architecture awards.
