St John the Evangelist Friday Street, Medieval church site in Bread Street Ward, City of London, England
St John the Evangelist Friday Street was a church building located at the intersection of Friday Street and Watling Street in the City of London. It featured a notable tower that defined the local streetscape and appeared on historical maps.
The church was originally dedicated as St Werburgh in 1246 and renamed St John the Evangelist during major reconstruction in the 13th century. This name change reflects the religious transformations that shaped medieval London.
The location served as a hub for religious discussion and theological debate during the early modern period. Visitors can still sense the spiritual importance the place held for London's medieval and Renaissance communities.
Visitors can still see traces of the former church location, including boundary markers above the Boots store at New Change and along Watling Street. A blue plaque marks the exact spot where the building once stood.
The parish recorded no deaths during the Great Plague of 1665-1666, a distinction held by no other parish in the City of London. This remarkable record sets it apart from every other religious community in the medieval City.
