Blundeston Windmill, Tower mill in Blundeston, Suffolk, England
Blundeston Windmill is a 21 meter tall tower mill with four sails, built from brick and clad with white weatherboard cladding. The structure was designed to contain all the essential working parts of the grinding system within its cylindrical form.
The windmill was built in 1820 and ground grain for more than a century before ceasing operation. The building was converted into a residence in the 1930s after the milling work ended.
The building shows how important grain milling was to the local economy and how villagers relied on such structures for their daily supplies.
The building is located at an easy-to-find spot in Suffolk and can be viewed from the outside since it is now privately owned. The white cladding makes it visible from across the village and serves as a recognizable landmark in the area.
The structure has a boat-shaped cap that automatically adjusts the sails according to wind direction without manual intervention. This fantail system was a practical innovation that allowed the miller to focus on other tasks.
