Stansted Mountfitchet Windmill, Historic windmill in Stansted Mountfitchet, England.
Stansted Mountfitchet Windmill is a five-story brick tower mill topped with a domed cap and rotating sails powered by the wind. The structure stands approximately 57 feet (17 meters) tall and displays the solid craftsmanship of its era.
The mill was built in 1787 for Joseph Lindsell and ground grain commercially until 1910, with several upgrades added along the way. A lightning strike in 2003 caused damage but repairs preserved its original mechanical parts and design.
The building served as a Scout meeting place from 1940 to 1963 and remains a landmark of local heritage in Stansted Mountfitchet. Visitors see in it a gathering point that shaped community life and memories over many decades.
The mill typically opens from Easter through October on the first Sunday of each month and on bank holiday weekends in the afternoon. It helps to check opening dates in advance to plan your visit properly.
The building caught the attention of the local community starting in 1940 when it became a Scout meeting place, connecting it to generations of young people. Later restoration efforts returned it to its original milling appearance while keeping those social memories alive.
