Dare Valley Country Park

Dare Valley Country Park is a large outdoor space with 200 acres of woodland, lakes, and streams in a valley near Aberdare. The grounds include walking trails of varying difficulty, children's play areas, and a specialized mountain bike zone with a lift service to help riders reach higher trails.

The site became Wales' first country park in 1973, transforming abandoned coal mines into a public recreation area. The two-year conversion process marked a turning point in how the region repurposed industrial land.

The park takes its name from the river that runs through it, reflecting the Welsh connection to natural water sources. Visitors notice remnants of the coal industry woven into the landscape, creating a blend of heritage and modern recreation.

The grounds have several entry points and marked trails of varying difficulty, so walkers of all levels can find suitable routes. A café provides refreshments and facilities include wheelchair-accessible areas and overnight accommodations for visitors planning longer stays.

The park was built on the site of former coal mines, and visitors can still see old industrial structures integrated into the landscape today. This blend of mining heritage and green recreation makes it an unusual example of how industrial land can be transformed.
