Haughton Hall, Grade II* listed country house in Shifnal, England
Haughton Hall is a red brick country house on Haughton Lane in Shifnal, Shropshire, with a seven-bay front facade and two flanking wings added to either side. The main elevation features stuccoed walls, giving it a slightly formal look compared to the plain brick of the wings.
Sir Humphrey Briggs, 4th Baronet and Member of Parliament for Wenlock, had the house built in 1718 on the site of an earlier estate. In the 1820s, the two flanking wings were added, changing the overall shape of the building from its original form.
Today the house operates as a hotel and wedding venue, and guests often notice the symmetry of the red brick front and the neat grounds on arrival. The interior retains period features that give the building a sense of age despite its current use.
The house sits on Haughton Lane just outside Shifnal and is easiest to reach by car. As it operates as a hotel and event venue, it is worth checking in advance whether access to the grounds is available on a given day.
Near the former walled garden stands a brick and stone pillar built as a memorial to Gimcrack, a celebrated racehorse of the 18th century. This small monument points to a connection between the estate and the world of horse racing that is easy to miss on a short visit.
