Sgùrr a' Choire Ghlais, Mountain summit in Highland, Scotland
Sgùrr a' Choire Ghlais is a mountain summit in the Scottish Highlands standing at about 1083 meters, positioned between Glen Strathfarrar and Glen Orrin. Two stone cairns sit at the top and mark the ridge location within this remote valley landscape.
The mountain became classified as a Munro, Marilyn, and Murdo based on height and prominence criteria set by Scottish mountaineering groups. These classifications grew from mountaineers documenting Scotland's most significant peaks during the 20th century.
The name comes from Scottish Gaelic and means 'Rocky Peak of the Grey Corrie', reflecting how the traditional language survives in Highland mountain naming. Walking through this landscape, you encounter a region where Gaelic heritage remains woven into everyday geography.
Reaching the summit means walking a long distance through Glen Strathfarrar from a trailhead accessible only with special permission. Plan for a full day of walking and check access conditions beforehand since the private road requires authorization.
North of this summit, no higher ground exists until reaching the Fannich mountains, making it a natural viewpoint across the northern Scottish landscape. This geographic feature creates surprisingly wide views that many walkers discover upon reaching the top.
