Shillinglee, English country house in Plaistow, England
Shillinglee is a two-story red brick country house with a slate roof and seven bays across its front elevation. The central doorway features rusticated pilasters, and attic spaces sit beneath the pitched roof.
The house was built in 1735 and redesigned in 1770 before being damaged by fire in January 1943 when Canadian forces accidentally set it ablaze during World War II. This wartime incident left lasting marks on the structure.
The grounds frequently hosted cricket matches during the nineteenth century, with both the fourth and fifth Earls Winterton participating in first-class cricket events.
The property sits near Haslemere Station, which offers direct train connections to London Waterloo. Shops and services are available in the nearby village of Chiddingfold.
The grounds include a landscaped park spanning about 2,000 acres with fishponds and arranged tree plantings. The park design reflects the influence of Capability Brown's landscape approach.
