Castle MacEwen

Castle MacEwen is a medieval stronghold on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne, with remaining stone walls and defensive works from multiple construction periods. The site consists of several structures that once served to control and protect the coastal region.

The fortress changed hands among major Scottish clans throughout its history, reflecting its strategic importance for regional control. These shifts in ownership shaped the development of the surrounding area over centuries.

The castle reflects power and control over the surrounding Loch Fyne region by successive clan families. Visitors walking around the site can sense how important this stronghold was for territorial authority.

The site is accessible via a marked walking path from Kilfinan, with parking available near the trailhead. The paths can become muddy depending on weather conditions, so sturdy footwear is wise.

Excavations in the 1960s uncovered an unusual boat-shaped building outside the main fortification, whose purpose remains a mystery. Archaeologists still debate whether it served as storage, a workshop, or something else entirely.
