Stonefield Castle, Country house and hotel near Tarbert, Scotland
Stonefield Castle is an L-shaped country house with two main stories and an attic level that overlooks Loch Fyne. The building features roll-moulded windows, corbelled corner towers, and ornamental stonework decorating its facades.
Edinburgh architect William Henry Playfair designed this house in 1837 in the Scottish baronial style. It replaced an earlier building called Barmore that had belonged to the MacAlister family.
The interior shows Scottish Renaissance style through geometric ribbed ceilings, marble fireplaces, and detailed doorways common in grand Scottish houses. These design choices reflect how wealthy Scottish landowners expressed their status and taste during that period.
The building operates as a hotel with individually decorated rooms, some with views of Loch Fyne and its surroundings. Visitors can walk through the surrounding woodland gardens that cover about 60 acres of grounds.
John Campbell brought back various Rhododendron and Magnolia species from botanical expeditions and planted them starting in 1850. These specimens continue to grow and are regarded locally as plants of botanical interest.
