Castle Sween

Castle Sween is a medieval castle ruin located on the eastern shore of Loch Sween. The site features thick stone walls and several standing structures arranged in a rectangular layout.

The castle was built in the late 12th century and served as a stronghold for Clan MacSween for generations. Control of the site changed hands during the medieval period as power shifted in Scotland.

The castle displays early Scottish stone building methods from medieval times. You can see how the thick walls were constructed and imagine the spaces where people once lived and worked.

The ruins are open year-round with no entrance fee and can be visited at any time. There are no facilities or staff on site, so come prepared to explore on your own.
