Signal Hill Battery, Artillery battery on Signal Hill, Gibraltar
The Signal Hill Battery occupies a strategic position at 370 meters above sea level, offering defensive coverage of the surrounding waters and territory.
Established in 1727, the battery initially contained a 6-pounder gun and later expanded to include four 6-inch guns and two QF 12-pounder guns by 1890.
The military installation represents the British defensive preparations in Gibraltar, forming part of a network of fortifications across the territory.
The Gibraltar Cable Car top station now occupies the former battery site, allowing visitors to observe remaining sections of the military infrastructure.
Beneath the battery lies Bellman's Cave, a tunnel containing a preserved Nissen hut and cooking areas where gunners once lived during their duties.
