Signal Hill Battery, Artillery battery on Signal Hill, Gibraltar
Signal Hill Battery is a historic artillery position on Signal Hill situated at 370 meters above sea level in a strategically important location. The site was later converted to accommodate a cable car station, though some sections of the original military installation remain visible.
The battery was established in 1727 with a single 6-pounder gun as its initial armament. Over time it was enlarged with additional guns of larger caliber to defend the surrounding waters and territory.
The battery was part of British defensive strategy and shows how important this location was for protecting Gibraltar. Today visitors can see remaining military structures at the cable car station that reflect this military past.
The site is accessible via the cable car that leads to the upper station where you can explore the remains. The elevation may require some effort, but the high altitude provides clear views of the surrounding area.
Beneath the battery lies Bellman's Cave, a tunnel containing a preserved Nissen hut and cooking areas where gunners once stayed during their service. This underground space reveals how soldiers were housed and fed while on duty.
