Lindow Common

Lindow Common is a nature reserve in Wilmslow with heathland, a central lake, and walking paths winding through the landscape. The varied habitats here support plants and animals that have become scarce across the region.

The site was once home to a horse racing track, whose traces remain visible today in the street name Racecourse Road. The transformation from racecourse to protected nature space shows how land use has shifted over time.

The site represents one of only two locations in Cheshire that maintain lowland wet heath areas, contributing to regional biodiversity conservation.

The site has two car parks and a compacted-stone circular trail of about 1.2 kilometers, suitable for wheelchairs. Visitors can walk the paths without major obstacles and explore the grounds with ease.

The name comes from Welsh and literally means Black Lake, pointing to the Celtic roots of this northwestern English landscape. This linguistic connection reveals the ancient history of the region and its ties to Welsh origins.
