Old Town Hall, Grade I listed town hall in Market Place, Carlisle, England
The Old Town Hall is a 17th-century town hall with a prominent stone clock tower and green slate roof standing in Market Place. Inside, two curved staircases lead to an entrance decorated with stone ornaments.
The current structure was built in 1669, replacing a medieval hall from 1345. An extension with a clock tower section was added in 1717.
The building served legal purposes for almost 3 centuries, hosting judges and magistrates who made decisions affecting the whole region. Visitors can sense how justice was administered from this very room for generations.
A visitor information center operates on the first floor, helping with accommodation suggestions, event tickets, and locally made goods. The center is easily reached from the main entrance on Market Place.
This location marks where the nation's first mailbox was installed in 1853, a pivotal moment in postal history. A replica of the original design now stands there to commemorate this early innovation.
