Carlisle, Former administrative district in Cumbria, England.
Carlisle was an administrative district in northwestern England that covered a large area between the Solway Firth and the Pennine Mountains. The district included both urban centers and countryside, spanning much of northern Cumbria.
The district was created in 1974 under the Local Government Act of 1972, merging several earlier local authorities into a single administrative unit. It existed until 2023, when local government reorganization combined its territory with surrounding areas.
The territory included numerous archaeological sites from Roman times, including sections of Hadrian's Wall and military settlements across the region.
The area centered on Carlisle city, which served as the administrative hub for district council services and local governance. Visitors today can explore the city and surrounding regions where the former district council operated its public services.
The former district contained England's most northern city and maintained strong connections with both Scottish and English communities across the border region.
