Basilica of Agios Stefanos

Basilica of Agios Stefanos is an early Christian church in Kos Municipality dating to around the 5th century after Christ. Today visitors see the remains of stone walls, columns, and various architectural elements that show how the building was originally structured.

The building was constructed in the 5th century and served Christians as a place of prayer and gathering. It was later abandoned and buried under sand before being uncovered by archaeologists in modern times.

The basilica shows how early Christians on the island designed their places of prayer and what building materials they had available. The visible remains reveal how people arranged stone and columns to create a space for communal worship.

The site is located along the coastal road near Kefalos and can be reached by car or on foot from a nearby parking area. When visiting, wear comfortable shoes and protect yourself from sun and heat, especially during midday and afternoon hours.

The floor of the basilica preserves original mosaics with geometric patterns and Christian symbols that are nearly 2000 years old. These detailed decorations give visitors a direct glimpse into the skill and faith of the early Christians who created this space.
