Church of St John the Divine, Brooklands, Gothic Revival parish church in Brooklands, England
The Church of St John the Divine is a Gothic Revival church with a six-bay nave, large three-light windows, square corner pinnacles, and a prominent west window. The sandstone structure provides a solid foundation for this revival style that shapes its tall spaces and broad openings.
The church was completed in 1864 under the direction of architect Alfred Waterhouse, who specialized in Victorian architecture. This was a time of major church building in England, when new parish churches served growing communities.
The interior displays yellow brick with colorful patterns, and a south nave window features stained glass made by Morris & Co in 1897. This crafted style shapes the space clearly and reflects the Victorian love of handmade details.
The connected St John's Centre offers community services including education programs, recreation activities, and resources for local residents. The site sits centrally in Brooklands and is easy to reach on foot or by public transportation.
The north vestry porch contains a specially carved doorway with the text 'Let Thy Priests Be Clothed With Righteousness' etched into the stone. This carefully chiseled inscription stands as a quiet witness to Victorian craft tradition.
