Ostrovo, Rural settlement in Markušica, Croatia
Ostrovo is a small settlement in the flat landscape of eastern Slavonia, surrounded by fields and pastures. The location sits approximately 88 meters above sea level in a region shaped by agricultural activity.
The settlement became part of Markušica municipality in 1997 under UNTAES administration, establishing new local governance structures. This reorganization followed a transition period that shaped the region after significant changes.
The population of 613 residents maintains both Croatian and Serbian traditions, with two official languages and the use of both Latin and Cyrillic scripts.
The L209 railway line from Vinkovci to Osijek connects the settlement to the broader region with stations in Ostrovo and nearby Gaboš. This connection enables regional train services and commuter travel to larger cities.
The settlement covers 16.44 square kilometers of land where twenty predominant family surnames shape the local community demographics.
