Venugopalaswamy Temple, Karvetinagaram, Hindu temple in Karvetinagaram, India
Venugopalaswamy Temple is a Hindu temple in Karvetinagaram, Andhra Pradesh, with a tall entrance tower decorated with stone figures. In front of the main shrine there is a wide open courtyard, and the grounds also contain an old step well.
The temple was built by King Venkataperumal of the Venkataraja dynasty and was first overseen by the rulers of Narayanavanam. Over time, its management passed to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, which still runs it today.
The temple is named after a form of Krishna shown as a cowherd playing a flute. During major festivals in the Hindu calendar, people from the surrounding area gather here to pray and take part in rituals together.
The temple is in Karvetinagaram and can be reached by bus from towns such as Tirupati and Chittoor. Visitors are expected to remove their shoes at the entrance and dress modestly, covering shoulders and legs.
The main deity statue shows Krishna alongside his two consorts Rukmini and Satyabhama, all carved from a single block of stone. A cow is also part of the sculpture, which sets this image apart from many other Krishna representations in the region.
