These caves were established during the late Maurya period when monks chose to live in them, with major additions made during the 9th century under a Ganga ruler. The layered history reveals how different groups expanded and refined the site over time.

The caves display intricate stone carvings of Jain deities in various poses, reflecting the religious art traditions that devotees came to honor. These sculptures show how followers expressed their faith through skilled craftwork carved directly into the rock.

Access to the caves is fairly straightforward since the chambers are naturally formed and carefully finished. The polished stone surfaces can become slippery, so it is wise to move cautiously and watch your footing in damp conditions.

The cave system preserves five different inscriptions, with the oldest dating to the 8th century and recording names and titles of leaders and monks. These written records offer direct insight into the people who once visited and supported this place.
