Jalakandeswarar Temple, Vellore

Jalakandeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple within Vellore Fort featuring two courtyards centered around a main shrine. The structure is surrounded by several smaller shrines and decorated with detailed stone carvings throughout the complex.

Construction of the temple began in 1274 CE with significant expansions during the Vijayanagara period between 1540 and 1572 under King Sadasivadeva Maharaya. This era shaped the architectural features visible today.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of a Shivalinga and also houses the goddess Sri Akilandeswari Amman. The worship of these deities reflects religious traditions that remain alive in this sacred location.

The temple is easily accessible, located roughly 1.5 kilometers from Vellore Town Railway Station. It is advisable to check visiting hours in advance, as they may vary depending on religious occasions.

A water tank called Agazhi completely surrounds the temple, reflecting the meaning of Jalakandeswarar as 'Lord Shiva residing in water'. This distinctive feature directly connects the site's physical design to its spiritual identity.
