Amirthi Zoological Park is a wildlife facility located near Vellore set within forested grounds. The park houses deer, foxes, monkeys, turtles, peacocks, crocodiles, and wild cats in natural enclosures.
The Tamil Nadu Forest Department founded this facility in 1967 to protect regional wildlife species in a dedicated space. The park was developed to conserve animals within an environment that mimicked their natural habitats.
The park's name comes from the Amirthi forest, whose 25 hectares are split in two: half a wildlife sanctuary, half a tourist area. Visitors reach the seasonal waterfall by a one-kilometre trek, and the forest is a candidate site for rejuvenation camps for temple elephants of Tamil Nadu.
The park lies about 25 kilometres from Vellore city and is best reached by vehicle. A trek of roughly one kilometre leads to the seasonal waterfall, which carries more water during the monsoon. Visitor numbers rise mainly on holidays, so other days are quieter.
Half of the Amirthi forest is kept as a wildlife sanctuary while the other half is developed as a tourist spot. A one-kilometre trek leads to a full view of the seasonal waterfall, which flows strongly during the monsoon.
