Kishinchand Chellaram College, Art Deco college in Churchgate, Mumbai, India
Kishinchand Chellaram College is a higher education institution in Churchgate, a neighborhood in central Mumbai, and forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to Art Deco architecture. The building occupies a campus of roughly 6500 square meters (about 70,000 square feet) and houses teaching spaces alongside an auditorium and areas for indoor athletic activities.
The institution opened in 1954 under the authority of the Hyderabad National Collegiate Board, and Morarji Desai, who served as Chief Minister of Bombay State at the time, attended the inauguration ceremony. Over the following decades, the school expanded its academic offerings by adding new departments and programs in both liberal arts and scientific disciplines.
The college organizes Kiran, an inter-collegiate youth festival that brings together students from over 60 Mumbai colleges for literary and arts competitions.
The faculties offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees across three main areas: sciences, humanities, and business. Special programs in media studies and information technology provide focused training in those fields.
The institution received Star College status from India's Department of Biotechnology in 2016, a designation that brought upgraded laboratory equipment to the campus. This recognition enables students to work on their own research projects and gain hands-on experience in biological fields.
