H. R. College of Commerce and Economics, Educational institution in Churchgate, Mumbai, India.
H. R. College of Commerce and Economics is a business and economics college in Churchgate, Mumbai, India, sharing a building with KC Law College. The structure follows Art Deco design with geometric lines, rounded windows and a pale stone facade typical of the district's 1930s urban architecture.
The college was established in 1960 by the Hyderabad Sindh National Collegiate Board, an organization that built many educational institutions after the 1947 partition for displaced families. Over the following decades, the institution grew into one of the city's respected business colleges and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing during the 2010s along with other Churchgate buildings.
The college takes its name from a wealthy Sindhi family who founded many schools and colleges after the partition of India. The campus sits in a neighborhood animated by students, lawyers and office workers, creating a busy weekday presence throughout the day.
The building stands a short walk from Churchgate railway station and is most active on weekdays during class hours. Visitors can explore the exterior facade and ground floor public areas, but should be aware that classrooms are reserved for students and faculty.
The building houses one of the few academic collections on the financial history of Mumbai, available for students and researchers working on projects. The institution sits within the protected World Heritage area, which meant that renovation work had to follow strict preservation guidelines.
