Eros Cinema, Art Deco movie theater in Churchgate, Mumbai
Eros Cinema is an Art Deco movie theater in central Mumbai featuring a distinctive red sandstone facade with a semi-circular tower at the entrance. Inside, multiple levels showcase white and black marble surfaces with ornamental details throughout the auditorium spaces.
The cinema was commissioned by businessman Shiavax Cambata and designed by architect Sorabji Bhedwar, opening in February 1938. It now stands as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and represents the architectural development of that era in the city.
This cinema embodies a blend of Indian and Western artistic traditions, visible in murals that show classical Indian buildings alongside Art Deco patterns and decorative details.
The theater is located at the intersection of Maharshi Karva Road in the business district and is easily accessible by public transport. The multi-level design provides different viewing angles and entry points throughout the building.
The interior decoration was created by Fritz von Dreiberg and includes relief sculptures of female figures and a large frieze showing film production stages. This artistic detailing gives the space a layer of craftsmanship that visitors often overlook.
