Kashi ropeway, Aerial tramway in Varanasi, India.
Kashi ropeway is an aerial transport system in Varanasi, India, linking five stations across nearly four kilometers. The cable cars float above the old town and provide a direct route from Varanasi Cantonment railway station to the city center near Godowlia Chowk.
Construction started in March 2022 after local authorities chose this solution instead of a metro for the densely populated city. The project is expected to finish in 2025 and will then operate as India's first public ropeway for urban transport.
This transportation system allows passengers to observe the ancient city of Varanasi from above while moving between important religious and commercial districts.
The system moves passengers in cabins holding up to ten people each and reduces the time needed to cross the city. Once open, riders can use it much like other public transport with set operating hours during the day.
Once complete, this route will be the third urban ropeway system worldwide used for daily public transport. The technology allows crossing over narrow and often congested streets of the old town without disturbing the existing buildings below.
