El-Goli, Persian garden in Tabriz, Iran
El-Goli is a Persian garden centered around a large artificial lake in Tabriz, Iran, featuring an octagonal pavilion in the middle surrounded by walking paths and planted areas. The lake spans roughly 200 meters across, with gardens containing trees and green spaces that create different zones for visitors to explore.
The garden began during the Aq Qoyunlu period in the 15th century and expanded under Safavid rule, with the Qajar prince Qahraman Mirza contributing later additions. Each period of rule left architectural marks on the layout and design of the space.
The name shifted from Shah Goli to El-Goli after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, marking a change from royal grounds to a public gathering space. Locals and visitors use the lakeside paths and gardens as a place for daily walks and family outings.
The site provides boat rentals, cycling paths, mini-golf facilities, restaurants, and free wireless internet throughout the grounds. Arriving earlier in the day is helpful for enjoying outdoor activities and exploring the paths comfortably.
The octagonal pavilion in the middle of the lake was rebuilt in 1967 following the original Timurid design and now serves as a restaurant. This structure blends historic architectural principles with contemporary use, showing how the space adapts to modern needs.
