Shahryar Literature Museum

Shahryar Literature Museum, Iranian national heritage site

The Shahryar Literature Museum is a historic house in Tabriz, Iran, located in the old Maghsudieh neighborhood and now protected as part of Iran's National Heritage. The two-story building holds more than 550 items including personal books, notebooks, calligraphy tools, photographs, and handwritten documents that belonged to the renowned poet Mohammad Hossein Behjat Tabrizi, known as Shahryar.

Shahryar was born in Tabriz in 1906 and began writing poetry as a child, publishing his first poem in a magazine at age 13. After his death the municipality purchased the house and converted it into a museum in the early 1970s to preserve his literary legacy and contributions to Iranian poetry.

The house once served as a gathering place for poets and writers from Tabriz who met here to share their work and discuss literature. Today the rooms reflect this deep connection between poetry and the city's identity, showing how important literary traditions remain to the local community.

The museum is conveniently located in central Tabriz near other important sites like Saint Mary Church and Tabriz Bazaar, making it easy to visit multiple historical places in a single day. The rooms are small and intimate so plan time to move slowly through the displays and read the handwritten documents and materials on view.

The museum displays a handwritten Quran that belonged to the poet, offering visitors a rare glimpse into his spiritual beliefs and daily life. This personal artifact provides insight into dimensions of Shahryar beyond his celebrated poems and published work.
