Atashgah Cave, Manmade grotto in Kashmar County, Iran.

Atashgah Cave is a modified grotto in Kashmar with two entrance passages that open into a series of interior chambers with varying proportions. The space was carefully designed for occupation and storage, with features typical of Sasanian-era construction.

The site developed as part of the Atashgah Castle complex during the Sasanian period, serving both as shelter and defensive position for a settlement. The natural rock formation was reinforced and adapted to meet the needs of occupation and protection.

The cave reveals how Persian builders adapted natural rock formations into functional spaces, transforming geology into architecture through skilled craftsmanship.

The site sits on exposed terrain with steep rock faces, so sturdy footwear is recommended for safe exploration of the cave and its surroundings. The paths to and around the entrance can be uneven and steep in places, requiring careful footing.

The cave sits on a rocky outcrop surrounded by cliffs on three sides, making it naturally isolated and difficult to approach from multiple directions. This geography provided natural protection and made it nearly impossible to reach unexpectedly.
