Piazza Dante, Square and pedestrian zone in Grosseto, Italy

Piazza Dante is a pedestrian square in the center of Grosseto, in Tuscany, surrounded by buildings ranging from medieval to more recent periods. The cathedral of San Lorenzo faces the square directly, alongside old palaces with pale-colored facades and a covered arcade running along one side.

The square was once called the Square of Chains and has served as the center of public life in Grosseto for centuries. Over time, it shifted from a place used for markets and community events to a fully pedestrian zone as the town developed around it.

At the center of the square stands a statue of Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine, placed where the old town well used to be. The arcades along the edges of the square still shelter small shops and cafes, where people stop to buy local goods or drink a coffee.

The square is easy to reach on foot and sits in the middle of the historic center, which is well connected to the rest of the town. Visiting in the morning or early evening gives a good sense of how locals use the space day to day.

Although Grosseto is in Tuscany, the architecture around Piazza Dante, with its pastel shades and arcades, looks more like a town square from northern Italy. This makes it feel slightly out of place for the region, which visitors often notice when they arrive.
