Haselburg, Medieval castle in Bolzano, Italy
Haselburg is a medieval fortification perched on a porphyry rock above the Aslago neighborhood, offering views across the Bolzano valley and the mountains beyond. The building contains an eastern wing with double arcades and a large hall in the northern section that displays medieval construction methods.
Construction began in the 12th century under the Lords of Haselberg, establishing the initial fortress on this elevated position. The 16th century brought significant changes when Leonhard II of Fiè expanded the structure and added a defensive wall.
The name Haselburg comes from the hazel shrubs that grow on the slopes surrounding this location. This connection to the natural landscape around the castle remains visible in how the area is still experienced today.
The location sits on a hilltop above Bolzano and is best reached on foot, so plan for a short climb to reach this elevation. A restaurant operates on site, though opening times vary with the season, so check ahead before visiting.
The northern section once contained original frescoes, but these were lost when the wing collapsed around 1880. This event led to major reconstructions that shaped how the structure looks today.
