Eurac Research, Research institute in Bolzano, Italy
Eurac Research is a research facility in Bolzano housed in a distinctive red building complex along Viale Druso. The center operates through eleven institutes and five specialized centers dedicated to sustainable development and energy technology.
The main building was constructed between 1934 and 1936 by architects Mansutti and Miozzo, originally serving a youth organization of that era. Decades later, a major renovation in 1995 transformed it into the research center it is today.
The institute brings together researchers from around the world, creating a space in South Tyrol where people from different countries collaborate on sustainability topics. This diversity shapes daily work and how different fields of research interact with each other.
The facility offers a public library with specialized publications and an auditorium with seating for roughly 314 people for conferences and events. The site is easily accessible and provides adequate parking for visitors.
The 1995 renovation preserved the original Pompeian red color of the building while introducing modern glass bridges between sections. These connections create a striking contrast between what was built then and what makes it work now.
