Casa del Menandro

The Casa del Menandro spans 1800 square meters within Regio I of Pompeii, featuring a central atrium, peristyle, private baths, and service quarters.

Built in 250 BCE and extensively modified during the Augustan period, this residence belonged to the Poppaei family, relatives of Emperor Nero's wife Poppaea Sabina.

The house displays fourth-style Roman wall paintings, including depictions of Greek poet Menander and scenes from the fall of Troy in its left wing.

The residence maintains clear divisions between its public and private spaces, with a formal entrance featuring stone benches for waiting clients.

A collection of 118 silver vessels and a wooden chest containing gold objects were discovered in a corridor beneath the private baths.
