Heiligkreuz-Hospiz, Mountain shelter at Santa Croce, South Tyrol, Italy
The Heiligkreuz-Hospiz is a mountain refuge at 2,045 meters (6,710 feet) elevation in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, ringed by Dolomite peaks and meadows dotted with alpine flowers. It offers overnight rooms, a dining space, and outdoor areas where you can sit and look out over the surrounding peaks.
A chapel was established here in 1484 and eventually became a place where pilgrims found rest and shelter during their mountain journeys. Over time, the site grew into a managed hospice for mountain travelers and hikers seeking food and lodging in this remote location.
The refuge welcomes hikers and pilgrims who gather to share meals rooted in South Tyrolean cooking traditions that have been passed down through the generations. The kitchen reflects how local food connects people to the landscape and to each other.
You can reach this place by hiking from the valley below or using a chairlift for easier access to the high elevation. Bring layers of clothing since mountain weather changes quickly at this altitude, and allow time for acclimatization if you are not used to heights.
The refuge has a webcam positioned to capture the evening light show called enrosadira, when the surrounding rock faces briefly glow in shades of pink and orange. This short-lived natural display happens as the sun angles across the mountain stone and draws many visitors who want to witness and photograph the moment.
