Sompunt, Building

Sompunt is an old Ansitz, a manor-like residence, in Abtei (Badia) in South Tyrol, first recorded in 1334. The old hamlet was rebuilt and enlarged into a lordly seat in 1598, as the year on its round-arched gate shows. A house chapel is housed in the main building, and a working, listed mill stands beside it.

Sompunt is first recorded in a document in 1334; its name means "above the bridge". The old hamlet was rebuilt and enlarged into a manor house in 1598, as the year on its round-arched gate shows. From 1700 it belonged to the lords of Mayrhofen zu Coburg and Anger; in 1859 it passed to a farmer, and since 1913 it has been held by the Castlunger family. In World War I it served as a military hospital.

The name Sompunt means "above the bridge" in German, referring to the bridge below the hamlet. The estate belonged to the lords of Mayrhofen zu Coburg and Anger from 1700, and since 1913 it has been held by the Castlunger farming family. A working, listed mill stands beside the main house.

The residence is located along Strada Sompunt between Badia and La Villa, accessible via the SS244 road through Val Badia. You can admire the exterior facade from the path, though the interior remains private and closed to visitors.

The painted facade described in older texts does not appear in the sources; what stands beside the main house is a working, heritage-protected mill. The estate served as a military hospital during the First World War, and a house chapel is housed inside the main building.
