Sas de Pütia

Sas de Pütia is a mountain summit in the Dolomites rising to 2,875 meters, featuring a distinctive two-peaked form that stands out against the surrounding landscape. The peak consists of rocky faces mixed with alpine meadows, creating a varied terrain around its upper slopes.

The mountain became known as a training ground for young mountaineer Reinhold Messner, who learned climbing skills here in his early years. His early ascents on these slopes shaped his later career as one of the 20th century's most accomplished alpinists.

The area forms a border where Italian, German, and Ladin-speaking communities live and maintain their own traditions. You notice this cultural mix as you walk through villages and mountain pastures, where language and building styles change.

The hiking trail starts from Passo delle Erbe and passes through alpine meadows and forest areas with varying elevation. Good hiking boots are important because sections become rocky, especially when using the protected climbing route.

A portion of the route uses a Via Ferrata with metal cables and rungs that allows less experienced hikers to reach the peak safely. This secured path makes the ascent accessible without requiring specialized climbing experience.
