Gallerie d'Italia - Milano

Gallerie d'Italia is an art museum in Milan's Piazza della Scala that spreads across three historic buildings and displays art from the 19th and 20th centuries. The spaces hold around 200 permanent works by Italian artists, presented in exhibition areas and dedicated collection spaces.

The museum was founded in 2011 and opened in 2012 in renovated bank buildings that were transformed into a cultural venue. This conversion of former financial spaces into exhibition areas defines the character of the place.

The collection focuses on Lombard artists and displays works that document regional artistic development from the 19th century onward. You can see how local painters and sculptors shaped the Italian art scene.

The museum is open several days a week with extended evening hours on certain nights, so plan flexibly based on your schedule. Visitors should expect gallery access to be staggered, and some collection areas can be explored separately during your visit.

One area of the museum uses former bank vaults as open storage spaces where visitors can view additional artworks directly from the collection. This unusual approach lets you peek behind the scenes of how a museum collection is maintained.
