Castel d'Appio, Medieval castle in Ventimiglia, Italy.

The pentagonal tower of Castel d'Appio stands atop a hill, with four original sides and remnants of a Roman-era water tank within its walls.

Constructed in 1140 by the Republic of Genoa after their first occupation of Ventimiglia, the castle served as a strategic military outpost.

Local traditions connect the castle's name to Roman consul Appius Claudius, who led campaigns against Ligurian tribes in 185 BCE.

The castle ruins offer views across the Roia and Latte valleys, reached by a marked trail starting from Ventimiglia's old town.

Dutch architect Eldert Ovèrzee purchased the castle in 2009 with plans to transform the ancient fortress into a cultural center.
