Albintimilium, Archaeological site in Ventimiglia, Italy
Albintimilium is a Roman settlement on the Ligurian coast situated between the Roia and Nervia rivers. The site displays a theater, public baths, residential buildings, and other structures that developed over several centuries.
The site developed on a Ligurian settlement and became a Roman port starting in the 2nd century BC. It reached peak importance as a trade hub before being gradually abandoned in the 5th century.
The mosaics and pottery found here show how Roman residents lived and what they valued in daily life. Inscriptions carved into stone reveal the names and professions of people who once walked these streets.
The site is easily reached from Ventimiglia's center and features information signs that guide visitors through the ruins. It is helpful to bring comfortable shoes and water, as the area is large and the sun is direct on the grounds.
Beneath the remains, history is layered: the theater was built in the 2nd century over older Republican walls. This overlapping shows how the place was repeatedly rebuilt and reshaped without completely erasing its past.
