Santa Caterina

Santa Caterina is a small chapel near Peccioli in Tuscany, situated beside a rural pathway with simple stone walls and traditional architectural details. The interior contains frescoed decoration that represents local religious artistic practices of the fifteenth century.

The chapel was built in 1822 during a period when rural religious structures were being added throughout the Diocese of Volterra. Its construction reflects the expansion of worship spaces in early nineteenth century Tuscany.

A tabernacle fresco created by Benozzo Gozzoli in the fifteenth century survives inside the chapel, a significant artwork from one of the era's most sought-after painters. Finding such a work in such a remote rural chapel is unusual and speaks to the site's former importance.
