Castello Malaspina

Castello Malaspina is a fortified stone castle in Bobbio situated on elevated ground with multiple towers and two northern entrances to the main building. The rectangular structure contains various interior rooms and now serves as a military museum with exhibitions related to warfare history.

The castle's construction began in 1304 under Corradino Malaspina and passed to the Visconti family in 1360 before later falling to the Dal Verme counts. These shifts in control shaped how the building was modified and used over subsequent centuries.

Inside, the castle displays rooms with historical details such as a grand hall with a stone fireplace and a chamber decorated with 16th-century wall paintings. Visitors can observe period furnishings and painted walls that reveal how people lived during that era.

The castle operates with different hours depending on the season, with varying opening days between summer and winter periods. It makes sense to check current opening times in advance since these change throughout the year.

Beneath the current entrance level lies a lower floor with several sealed rooms situated about 3 meters (10 feet) below the visible foundation. This hidden sublevel reveals how the castle was modified over time and was partially filled in.
