Santi Pietro e Girolamo, Post-war church in Collina di Pontelungo, Pistoia, Italy.
Santi Pietro e Girolamo is a parish church on a hilltop near Pistoia with a large portico that wraps around three sides of the building. The baptistery sits beside the main nave and has a separate entrance from the portico.
The original parish church was destroyed in 1944, after which architect Giovanni Michelucci designed a replacement. The new structure was completed around Christmas 1952.
The interior shows a curved ceiling above the main altar and varied lighting that creates distinct zones within the church. These shaped spaces guide visitors as they move through the building for worship.
The hilltop requires a short walk upward, but views of the surrounding landscape open up as you climb. Wear sturdy shoes since the path can be steep in places.
The architect deliberately designed this building as a place for everyone, using local materials to connect with the rural landscape around it. This choice is visible in how the house blends with the land and the traditional structures of the region.
