Santa Maria Nova, Renaissance church in historic center of Vicenza, Italy.
Santa Maria Nova is a former church building with Renaissance architectural features located in the historic heart of Vicenza. Its structure displays symmetrical proportions and classical design elements typical of that artistic period.
The building was created in the 1580s and funded by the nobleman Lodovico Trento. It was designed as a complement to the nearby Augustinian convent and completed in 1590.
The building was originally filled with paintings by Francesco Maffei and other Renaissance masters, which were taken away over time. These absent artworks tell the story of how decorated the interior once was.
The building sits within walking distance of other Renaissance monuments in the city center. As a former place of worship, access may be limited, so it is worth checking current visiting conditions beforehand.
This building is the only complete church design that Andrea Palladio actually executed in Vicenza itself. His other contributions in the city were mainly palaces and public buildings rather than full churches.
