Museo Archeologico Ostiense

The Museo Archeologico Ostiense is a national museum in Rome displaying finds from the ancient Roman port city of Ostia. The collection includes statues, sculptures, and portraits recovered from excavations at this historical site.

The museum was established in 1865 and occupies a 15th-century building that was originally used as a storage facility. The conversion of this warehouse into an exhibition space marked the beginning of its role as a museum.

The collection displays portraits of philosophers, emperors, and other important figures from ancient times. These works show how Romans chose to represent their leaders and influential people.

The museum is located on Viale dei Romagnoli and remains closed on Mondays. Visitors should check in advance about admission reductions and plan enough time to view the collection at a comfortable pace.

The museum houses a remarkable sculpture of Perseus holding Medusa's head and a sculptural group depicting Mithras slaying a bull. These pieces rank among the most striking and lesser-known treasures in the collection.
