Museo archeologico provinciale della Lucania occ

Museo archeologico provinciale della Lucania occ, Archaeological museum in Padula, Italy.

Description

The Provincial Archaeological Museum of Western Lucania is housed within the Certosa di San Lorenzo and displays finds ranging from the 10th century BC through the 6th century AD. The collections come from excavations in the surrounding region and include pottery, weapons, jewelry, and various everyday objects from ancient times.

History

The museum was established in 1957 based on excavations conducted by the Provincial Museums Directorate of Salerno in the area. Its collections were formed through systematic digging of roughly 1500 graves and reveal how the region was inhabited across many centuries.

Culture

The collections reveal differences between male and female burials from ancient times, with men's tombs holding iron weapons and women's graves containing spinning tools, jewelry, and ornamental objects. These items speak to the daily lives and roles of the people who once inhabited this region.

Practical

The museum is open daily except Tuesdays and provides access to extensive collections displayed across multiple rooms within the Certosa. Visitors should plan for standard daytime hours and allow enough time to explore the various displays.

Did you know?

The collection includes fine Attic Greek pottery and architectural terracotta pieces called antefixes decorated with images of Maenads and Silenus heads unearthed between 1957 and 1958. These ornamental roof tiles reveal how the region was connected to Greek artistic traditions and cultural influence.
