Rocca dei Boiardo

The fortress spans 5000 square meters with medieval towers, Renaissance porticoes, and Baroque architectural elements, including a grand staircase and decorated windows.

Built in 1315 by Da Fogliano family as a defensive structure, the castle transformed into a noble residence under Boiardo family from 1423 to 1560.

The castle contains rooms where poet Matteo Maria Boiardo was born and scientist Lazzaro Spallanzani conducted experiments in the basement chambers.

The castle opens weekends with five guided tours daily, allowing groups of ten visitors to explore the gardens, secret passages, and Este apartment rooms.

The fortress walls display terracotta statues created in 1619 by sculptor Giovan Battista Pontelli, representing members of the Thiene family.
